Turnaround Table 4: The Hero's Journey

Mindful of the TurnaRound

Despite warnings of traffic and parking restrictions due to the visit of the Queen 40 hardy leaders demonstrated their ingenuity and arrived by bike, taxi and on foot to be warmly greeted by Melanie who had reprised her role as MC for the occasion. Everyone took their places at tables which were names after films ...from "Lord of The Rings" to "American Beauty" ...in anticipation of Saris presentation.

Ian McClean: Against the Odds

"Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people."
- W. C. Fields
Ian McClean

Our own Ian McClean began by sharing the wisdom gained from a combination of 15 years of developing people & 30 years of betting on horse races. Ian's five key insights related equally well to leading in business and betting for profit.

  1. Know which game you are playing
  2. Know your Edge
  3. Get busy Winning – not busy losing
  4. There's is no such thing as a mistake – only feedback
  5. Challenge your assumptions

Sari then took to the microphone and expertly talked us through each of the 12 stages of the hero's journey. At each stage she provided us with engaging examples from popular films (hence the table names!) as well as examples from her own career and clients experiences. Finally Sari coached a volunteer through his own hero's journey, to deepen our understanding of the model & aided personal reflection on how it could relates to our own lives and careers.

Provoking Thought: Table Discussion

Finally participants turned to their own table to reflect, discuss and debate what they had just heard from our speakers. The question "Which Stage of the Hero's Journey is Ireland Inc currently at?" proved very interesting, and many stages were suggested; from "prologue" to "the dagger" among others! Participants then discussed in pairs their own "Hero's Journey" and how they were currently influencing success in their organizations. Finally each table shared their insights in a round table format.
