When describing leadership, we are including management and that which is beyond management and defines leadership.
So what makes leaders effective? At the most rudimentary level effective leaders are underpinned by 2 basic fundamentals – they think like effective leaders and they communicate outwardly like effective leaders. In addition they have mastered 4 primary attributes which are called the 4 pillars of effective leadership:
- Shaping and sharing a compelling vision
- Leading by example and managing self
- Inspiring the individual
- Orchestrating the team
Leadership excellence is never static and is constantly evolving. Whether a supervisor, middle manager or senior manager the challenges are the same, but different. When we develop leaders at different levels within an organisation our strategy acknowledges both the sameness of the challenges facing its leaders and the differences - as well as the greater complexities leaders face at different levels and in different times throughout the organisation. As the scale and complexity of the leadership challenge increases, so our leadership programmes broaden, deepen and alter in duration.
